HOSPICE COLLEGE OF AMERICA
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

MISSION STATEMENT

It is the mission of Hospice College of America to offer educational opportunities to health care professionals in a convenient, affordable and cost effective manner, so as to improve the level of hospice care in the U.S., with the goal of improving the American health care system, and the role of hospice within it.

What is Hospice College of America?
Hospice College of America (HCA) is a subsidiary organization of Hospice Foundation of America (HFA) which offers distance learning education for health care professionals.

How is the college organized?
HCA is a non-profit public charity organized under section 501-C-(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

How are courses offered?
All courses are offered either for home study or for online learning. The online courses are offered at the student’s pace. That is, they are asynchronous courses, not held in real time.

We do offer continuing education credits that are accepted by a wide range of certifying boards for various health care professionals. Individual health care employers may accept our certificates of completion, but that is up to them.

How does HCA do its work?
Hospice College of America meets its mission by conducting programs of professional development for health care professionals, primarily those who work in helping people to cope either personally or professionally with terminal illness, death, and the process of grief.

How is HCA funded?
HCA is funded primarily through course fees, and also contributions from individuals and corporations, bequests, grants from foundations, gifts from associations, civic and fraternal groups. Donations to the College are tax deductible to the extent permitted by law. All donations are used to foster the hospice concept of care.

For the Engaging Faith course, what if religious beliefs encourage different practices than what you propose?
It is not the purpose of the clergy education curriculum to challenge religious or ethical belief systems. No religion is opposed to hospice, and the principles offered are all drawn from hospice experience.
